About Labiaplasty

As aesthetic standards for all parts of the body shift with trends, many more women feel self-consciousness about the size of their labia minora when they do not lay flush with the labia majora tissues. These trends standardize a more “youthful” structure and shape, leading many women toward finding solace in labiaplasty. This procedure’s popularity increases each year, 14,368 being performed in 2020 alone. (1)

Labiaplasty surgery usually involves reducing the labia minora horizontally and/or vertically, as well as shortening the clitoral hood. For some patients, both are necessary to achieve the desired look. There are two main techniques to perform this procedure: the trim and the wedge incision techniques. (2)

Labia minora and majora come in many different shapes and sizes, and they can all be aesthetically and functionally preferable. In order for some women to feel completely comfortable in their own sexuality and body, labiaplasty can provide patients with the labia minora and outline that they desire, safely and effectively.

Why Choose Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is designed to improve both the physical and emotional well-being of women who may be experiencing discomfort or dissatisfaction with the appearance of their labia.

If you are experiencing or have experienced any of the following, you may be a good candidate for labiaplasty.

  • Discomfort or pain due to enlarged or asymmetrical labia: Enlarged or asymmetrical labia can cause physical discomfort during certain activities such as exercise or sexual intercourse. Labiaplasty can help alleviate these issues by reducing excess tissue and restoring balance and proportion to the labia.
  • Self-consciousness or low self-esteem due to the appearance of your labia: Many women may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia, which can impact their confidence and overall well-being. Labiaplasty can provide a solution by reshaping and contouring the labia to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  • Discomfort during physical activities, such as exercising or wearing tight clothing: Excess labial tissue can cause discomfort and irritation during physical activities or when wearing tight clothing. Labiaplasty can help create a more comfortable experience by reducing the size and prominence of the labia.
  • Trauma or injury: Trauma or injury to the labia can result in disfigurement or asymmetry. Labiaplasty can help restore the natural appearance of the labia by reconstructing and reshaping the affected areas.
  • Significant weight loss or aging: Significant weight loss or the natural aging process can cause changes in the labia, including sagging or excess tissue. Labiaplasty can address these concerns by removing excess skin and reshaping the labia to achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Please consider the following when assessing your candidacy for labiaplasty. You must also be:

  • In good overall health
  • Accepting of the limitations of the surgery
  • Willing to quit all consumption of tobacco and nicotine products
  • Open to medication restrictions or changes before and after procedure

Labiaplasty Techniques

Wedge Technique

The wedge technique is a popular approach for labiaplasty as it preserves the natural edge and contour of the labia. A small, wedge-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the center of the labia minora, allowing for a precise reduction while maintaining a natural appearance. This technique minimizes scarring and promotes faster healing.

Trim Technique

The trim technique involves removing the excess tissue along the entire length of the labia minora. This method is suitable for patients who desire a significant reduction in size or have irregularities along the edges of the labia. The trim technique provides a smooth and symmetrical result, but it may result in a longer scar compared to the wedge technique.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

The clitoral hood and the surrounding structures encase a major system of sexual nerves in women’s bodies. It is imperative that it not be harmed or altered too much during a labiaplasty to keep the integrity of the patient’s sexual sensation. To provide patients with a more pleasing shape while also preserving this important aspect of their sexual organ, the lateral clitoral folds can be reduced safely by using small, curved incisions. Labiaplasty Benefits

Labiaplasty can provide cosmetic and functional benefits. For many women, this procedure can give them a new perspective on sexual activity with intimate partners. The reduced anxiety and self-consciousness can allow patients to revive their sex lives and allow them to be comfortable engaging in things that they love to do without hesitation.

A few benefits of receiving labiaplasty surgery are:

  • Increased self confidence
  • Comfortability when wearing tight fitting clothing and riding a bicycle
  • Decreased sexual anxiety
  • Possible correction of discoloration
  • Better symmetry of labia minora
  • Decreased chance of developing urinary tract infections

Personal Consultation with Dr. Yoo

Your consultation with Dr. Yoo will consist of a medical examination, a thorough explanation of labiaplasty surgery, and time to ask any questions about the process. He will ask about your medical history, the symptoms you are experiencing, and whether you’ve had any past procedures. The consultation process also allows you both time to explore the potential outcomes of the surgery to make sure you are on the same page. Dr. Yoo may also perform some blood tests to make sure you are in good health and ready for surgery.

Preparation

Dr. Yoo may prescribe certain medications during your consultation, and it is preferable that you fill them before your procedure date. Make sure you eat a balanced diet and keep a consistent sleep schedule beforehand. You should ask someone you trust to take you home after your surgery. Stop taking any anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen for a month before your procedure date, and limit your alcohol intake. You may be required to shave the area the day of your surgery.

Before your procedure, Dr. Yoo will preoperatively mark the areas that you are unhappy with and plan out his surgical strategy. To help you envision the final results, you are given a mirror to observe and discuss your genitalia with Dr. Voo in real time to make sure the results are satisfactory.

Labiaplasty Procedure

Dr. Yoo will start the procedure by providing either local or general anesthesia. If local is used, you are also sedated to guarantee your comfort. Once you are prepared for surgery, Dr. Yoo starts by carefully placing his incisions. After the excess labial tissue is removed, Dr. Yoo meticulously sutures the labia in a symmetrical, smooth pattern with dissolvable stitches. This procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours to complete.

Dr. Yoo prioritizes patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction throughout every labiaplasty procedure. With his expertise and individualized approach, he helps each patient achieve their desired outcome while maintaining natural-looking results.

Recovery and Results

This procedure usually results in around a week of downtime, so you should request some time off of work to stay home and focus on a smooth recovery. Total healing time usually takes around 6 to 8 weeks. Dr. Yoo may prescribe antibiotics and pain medication, so make sure you stick to the regimen he gives you to stay healthy and comfortable. Wear loose clothing to prevent any irritation and avoid any strenuous activity. Do not engage in sexual activity for at least six weeks after your surgery, and avoid using tampons. If you are in some pain, you may take epsom salt baths to safely reduce inflammation and irritation.

After your swelling starts to subside by the sixth postoperative week, you will be able to fully appreciate your results. The aesthetic goal of labiaplasty is to create neat labia minora that can be easily covered up by the labia majora when in a relaxed position.

This service is highly customizable, which may include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, liposuction, and labiaplasty procedures. FAQ

Will labiaplasty surgery result in decreased sensitivity during sex?

As an experienced and knowledgeable surgeon, your surgeon will take great care to avoid scarring the clitoral triangle. This will ensure your sensation does not decrease after the procedure. In fact, some patients report that their sensitivity increases after excess labia minora is removed.

How long do the results of labiaplasty last?

The results of labiaplasty are intended to be long-lasting. While the aging process and childbirth can affect the appearance of the labia over time, the improvements made during the surgery should be permanent. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and communicate any concerns with your plastic surgeon to ensure the longevity of your results.

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation, also known as cosmetic gynecology or vaginal aesthetics, encompasses various surgical procedures designed to enhance the appearance and function of the female genitalia. These procedures can include labiaplasty, labia reduction, hymenoplasty, clitoral hood reduction, and vaginal tightening. Vaginal rejuvenation aims to improve self-confidence, sexual satisfaction, and overall well-being.
